  • University of California tuition likely to increase soon

Great news for the rich and poor.

"Hard times continue to grind California’s system of ten research universities, with an 8 percent or $822 tuition increase for all students for the 2011-12 academic year probable.

Under the proposal unveiled Monday, undergraduate fees for California residents would rise to $11,124 a year, or an average of $12,150 when campus-based fees are included.

University of California President Mark Yudof says the actions are intended to shore up university finances, preserve educational excellence and increase enrollment."

The rich can afford the tuition and the poor get scholarship, for the rest, they can visit.

Our public colleges and universities are pricing middle class Californians out of the government education system. Like jobs, the place to go is Arizona, Texas or Utah if you want an affordable world class education.

Does this make you feel like the UC system is for the middle class, "He says the university should provide grants to cover the 8 percent increase for one year for financially needy California undergraduates with household incomes of less than $120,000.

Mr. Yudof says he will push for an expansion of the university's “Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan,” which now ensures that qualified California students who come from families with incomes under $70,000 have their tuition fully covered by financial aid."
