  • Do high taxes cost state jobs? Democrats Disagree

The Left has a phrase, “don’t believe your lying eyes."

"It’s become a commonplace among many Republicans, conservatives and libertarians that California’s high-tax climate kills jobs. The jobs are destroyed, driven to other states, or not created here in the first place.

A different view comes from some work done by the Public Policy Institute of California, a think tank that claims to have no ideological tilt yet which seems to lean to the Left. Jed Kolko, PPICs associate director and research fellow, has written in an article, California loses few jobs to other states:

A recurring complaint about California and one revived again recently is that states with lower taxes and fewer regulations are luring businesses, and the jobs they generate, out of state. But the reality is that California loses very few jobs to other states. Business relocations are highly visible when they happen but are a misleading guide to the states economic performance. Businesses rarely move out of or into California, and on balance, the state loses just 11,000 jobs a year. Thats just .06 percent of the states 18 million jobs. Far more jobs are gained or lost because businesses launch, expand, contract and close."

So, the high unemployment in California is caused just by AB 32? California unemployment is caused by the delta smelt? The fact that taxes are up while revenues are down is because of the "house being in the third moon", not tax and fee policy.

Makes for good fiction, but it is not the real world.

Raise taxes and fees, raise the cots of doing business and companies can not hire, or they are no longer competitive with out of State firms--so they leave this State. That is the real world.
