  • Walters: California Ports Being Killed

Dan Walters accurately notes that our California ports are in trouble, like the rest of the industries in the State. And, like the other industries, government is the chief cause of the problem.

"Just last week, Sen. Dean Florez, a Democrat who represents the San Joaquin Valley but wants to become lieutenant governor, staged a hearing at the Port of Los Angeles to air local complaints about effects of port traffic.

While paying lip service to the ports' importance, Florez declared that it's important "to ensure that those profits do not come at the expense of the health of surrounding communities."

In about ten years a superport will be built just below Tijuana--this will end the California ports. Under NAFTA, Mexican trucks can go anywhere in the US. Under the current rules, on January 1 hundreds of VERY cheap, well maintained, trucks will be sold to Mexicans who will establish routes in this State and nation. How? California has outlawed trucks older than 16 years, based on junk science.

Oh, and the drivers, if they want to work at a Port need to pay bribes to a union. "Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, meanwhile, is carrying water for the Teamsters union, trying to force independent truckers to become employees and join the union under the rubric of fighting pollution."

Yes, this is why we have a California Depression and will not get out of it.
