  • San Diego: Another water rate hike? Not so fast, says DeMaio

Thanks to AGS (Al Gore Syndrome) the cost of energy and water is going up. AB 32,SB 375 and the Guv have decided fictional data created by scientists who wanted grants more than honesty, assures Californians that running a home or business will go up, fast and high.

"City officials earlier this month suggested that water rates would climb by 4.69% or about $3.40 per family per month, marking a 65% hike since 2007, or an increase from $43.13 in 2007 to $71.24 in 2011 for the average San Diego resident. Water department personnel claim the hike reflects a surge in the cost of importing water from the Southern California Metropolitan Water Division (MWD), but critics, like San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio, insist theres a better way.

I wrote about this phenomenon in this space back in February, pointing out that an independent city audit found that the citys underperforming and wasteful Bid to Goal program bore some responsibility for the water departments budget shortfall.

Now, DeMaio calls the proposed hike absolutely unnecessary, noting that it could be forestalled if only the Mayor and City Council act now to eliminate wasteful spending within the budgets for our city, County and regional water agencies.

Instead of raising rates, government should run efficient, non political operations. Even better--allow honest regulations based on facts, not ideology to run the system. This is part of the reason California cannot recover from the Depression.
