  • Government Knows: Higher Taxes and Fees Kills the Economy

Here is an interesting statement, "East Bay governments are trying to stimulate home development, and by extension their property tax revenues, by giving breaks to builders in the form of cuts, repeals and deferrals of fees.

The agencies say they are granting the incentives because they want developers to hire unemployed workers and add to the property tax base by building homes."

In other words the politicians are cutting taxes and fees because the taxes and fees imposed have killed jobs and revenues.

"Starts for single-family homes, condominiums and apartments in the East Bay fell from 10,204 at the height of the building boom in 2006 to 2,453 in 2009, according to the California Building Industry Association in Sacramento.

The trend toward economic stimulus efforts that include fee reductions and deferrals seems to be gathering momentum, according to the building industry association, although it may be too soon to tell whether the strategies will help.

Lots of jurisdictions are losing revenue and taking action in the form of a local stimulus that could help jump-start construction," said Mike Castillo, the building association's communications manager."

Government needs to be applauded for its venture into the world of the free market. Hope it stays.
