  • Some profs want Cal to stop subsidizing sports

Should the science department at Cal Berkeley "loan" money to the football team instead of using it for better equipment for the Department?

"When UC Berkeley lends its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics millions of dollars to pay its bills each year - and even forgives that debt at times - it's helping a top-tier college sports program beloved by thousands of fans.

But a growing number of Cal academics are disturbed by the practice, arguing that the prestigious research university should not subsidize elite athletes at a time of soaring college costs, faculty furloughs and reduced course offerings."

Did anybody know this corruption was going on? The issue is simple, the UC system has determined volleyball, football, water polo and competitive golf is more important than education.

The purpose of education is education--except in government schools. There, they believe sports and games are the first priority. At least in private schools, the attendees agree to the system, voluntarily.

Can California live without a Cal football team--absolutely. Can we live without scientists? NO.

Here is an idea. Want to play football, go to the "minor leagues" set up by the NFL--if the NFL doesn't set these up, tough, this is their problem not ours.

    What do you think?
