  • Will SoCal Newspapers Merge?

The LA Times has lost about 400,000 circulation, from its leadership days as a "respected" newspaper.

The OC Register and Daily News have all lost trust credibility and lots of subscribers. The SD Union-Trib is read only by the government agents and PR folks who supply most of the information for this once trusted newspaper. Like most in the dead tree industry, unless they become local community newspapers, they will fail. Some think there is an answer.

"Now investment houses that ultimately control the newspapers and local managers have come to the same conclusion: Their newspapers will survive, and possibly thrive, only if they are joined together under common ownership....

Executives in the thick of the [Register] deal expect bids to be submitted by early next month and a decision made not long after that.

The individual newspapers would maintain their identities, names, news staffs and editorial boards, in an effort to hold on to loyal readers. They would combine all other operations: ad sales, printing, distribution, human resources and publicity."

In the short run, this will stave off the inevitable--alternative and community newspaper will be the main source of information in the dead tree division. Cable news, blogs and newsletters the main source of information in the electrons division. Buggy whips are for entertainment and remembrance, that will be the fate of mainstream newspapers, turned government information agents.
