  • Caldwell: No progress for California?s pilgrims

My good friend Andy Caldwell makes a great point--if today’s rules were in place in 1619, the Pilgrims might have died.

"Have you ever imagined the pilgrims’ plight, if the Native American community would have been a little bit more progressive and advanced in the evolution of their society, something akin to California today?

For starters, they would not have been able to land at Plymouth Rock because it was not designated as a port of entry. Although the children on the ship would have qualified for in-state tuition.

They would not have been able to establish their base camp on the coast, for a variety of factors involving coastal act provisions. For instance, they could not build a fort because that would deny beach access to non-fort residents.

They would not have been able to build stairs to the beach or seawalls, as that is thought to negatively affect tidal flows and cause beach erosion. They would not have been able to clear an area for their community as a result of provisions concerning clear-cutting, the interruption of wildlife corridors and various impacts to the viewshed."

Under the rules they good not grow food, build shelter or worked with the Native Americas due to government regulation on water, zoning, needed permits and labor laws.

Who says the United States is the land of the free? We are the land of government, the opposite of freedom.
