  • Develop homegrown oil

An opinion piece by Carl Gluesing in the Riverside County Press Enterprise 9-27-09:

    Develop homegrown oil

Your article "It's a boom time in oil exploration" celebrates this fact (Sept. 24). International oil exploration is good for the world, but not for the United States. As we continue to pour our energy dollars overseas, our economy continues to suffer.

We are ignoring huge sources of untapped oil reserves here in the United States. For example, the Bakken oil formation in North Dakota and Montana encompasses about 25,000 square miles. The U.S. Geological Survey says it is the largest continuous oil accumulation it has ever assessed. This resource, which would give us more oil independence, sits underdeveloped because of a lack of attention by our government.

Why doesn't this administration focus on American resources, and encourage our domestic oil industry to develop this enormous discovery? This would slow down the United States' continually growing demand for international oil.
