  • Feinstein Wants More Charity For Farmworkers Idled By Drought

Feinstein seeks help for food banks in Calif.

Dayatra Latin, director of operations for the Community Food Bank in Fresno, said her organization feeds about 70,000 people a week - 30,000 more than it served two years ago.

It distributes rice, dried beans, pasta, poultry and canned fruits and vegetables. She said lines for food are typically one or two blocks long.

During a recent distribution, recipients began lining up at 4 a.m., even though the food was not scheduled to be made available until five hours later.

While Feinstein blamed the problem on a three-year drought, some Republican lawmakers have said the water shortage is man-made. Pumping from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta has been reduced periodically to protect the delta smelt, listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.
How about a couple of Border Patrol agents attending who verify that those who receive aid are legally present and expedite removal of those who aren"t?
