  • 'Flu-like' symptoms strike 12 at St. Mel School

Teachers Molly Nichols, left, and Fran DellaSerra, leave St. Mel School, that was closed in fear of a a flu outbreak. Sacramento County public health and church officials temporarily closed the Catholic school, when a student there became ill, last week, with what may be a new strain of influenza.
What are described as "flu-like" symptoms have developed in 12 people who came in contact with students at St. Mel School in Fair Oaks, the private school where three seventh-grade students and a health care worker have already tested positive for swine flu, according to Sacramento County health officials.
Samples from the 12 St. Mel individuals, students and some family members have not been analyzed yet for swine flu. County health care officials are in the process of interviewing the 12 individuals to first determine if they indeed are sick with flu. Those who are sick will be tested for swine flu.
The health care worker - whose sample is deemed probably swine flu - had monitored the St. Mel families and came down with symptoms on Sunday, said Glennah Trochet, Sacramento County's public health officer.
Of 40 samples tested by the county on Monday, three - two more students and the health care worker - are considered probable swine flu cases and state testing is expected to confirm that diagnosis. The original case of swine flu at St. Mel was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Sacramento County's lab now has 50 samples awaiting results.
The health care worker's sample has been sent for confirmation to the state's high-tech lab in Richmond. On Tuesday that lab began examining samples for the new variety of swine flu.
